What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that predominately dopamine-producing (“dopaminergic”) neurons in a specific area of the brain called substantia nigra. Symptoms generally develop slowly over years. The progression of symptoms is often a little bit different from one person to another due to the diversity of the disease. People with Parkinson’s disease may experience:

  • Tremor
  • Bradykinesia
  • Limb Rigidity
  • Gait & Balance Problems

Although there is no cure treatment options vary and include medication. While Parkinson’s itself is not fatal, disease complications can be very serious.

The first step to living well with Parkinson’s disease is to understand the disease and how it progresses. It is possible that you can still have a good to great quality of life.

Stages of Parkinson's

Parkinson’s Disease impacts people in different ways. Not everyone will experience all the symptoms of
Parkinson’s Disease.

Diagnosis

There is no “one way” to diagnose Parkinson’s Disease (PD). However, there are various symptoms and diagnostic tests used in combination to confirm this.
